Not every street will be filled with fun-frights tonight. There are real-life horror shows presently undermining peace, justice, life, and prosperity. As costumes come off and candy is unwrapped by those enjoying the spoils of the holiday, we must remain vigilant to the real evils and masked injustices that hold humanity captive.

In Sudan, the news of genocidal violence has returned to the Darfur region, including a horrific attack on a hospital where hundreds are reported murdered. Over 40 children died in Gaza from retaliatory Israeli missile strikes despite a brokered ceasefire with Hamas. Russia continues its relentless campaign of carnage on the people of Ukraine, targeting homes, energy facilities, and civilian institutions. Hundreds are dead in a political protest following elections in Tanzania. And Jamaica and Cuba begin the painful process of rebuilding as immediate relief for food, water, shelter, and clothing is needed in the most devastated places following Hurricane Melissa.

Nationally, ICE raids continue to send chilling vibes through communities as mothers and fathers are arrested and families separated in broad daylight. A monthlong government shutdown threatens food, healthcare, and other benefit programs that millions of families rely upon, especially as the price of food and everyday goods continues to rise. Sidewalks and memorials reflecting communities standing in solidarity with their marginalized Black and LGBTQ neighbors are destroyed. The historical realities of slavery, oppression, and injustice from colonization are being removed from national museums and public displays. And the United States military is being instructed to wage an ideological war on American streets.

The present state of the world is indeed chilling, but hope is still alive and the ability to change course is within our capacity. Standing against injustice is not lawless or disloyal, but an act of love that level-sets the consciousness of society to the highest standards of justice for all people. Violence, oppression, and prejudice have no place in a divine movement of restorative peace. We are closer to achieving it when all people are recognized, belong, and provided with equitable opportunities that contribute to our mutual global flourishing.

Standing against injustice is not lawless or disloyal, but an act of love that level-sets the consciousness of society to the highest standards of justice for all people.

On this All Hallow’s Eve, we remember the children who have suffered and perished under acts of evil and vow to stand for restorative peace and justice in their memory. We strive to treat every person with dignity over tricks of exploitation and injustice. We resist violence and hate with radical acts of nonviolence and love. We do so because all people are made in the image of God and worthy of a full life.
