There is a lack of imagination in our society today. Not the kind that sparks creative ideas and innovations in art, technology, science, or design. The imagination we lack is one that conjures dreams and aspirations of a world that can be realized but is not yet. We lack an imagination of relentless possibility—a hopeful and better tomorrow that promotes resilience for everyone, everywhere.
We’re consumed with the immediate. The mounting struggles of daily life overwhelm and distract, creating a constant demand for solutions that alleviate our stressful existence. Patience is not a virtue practiced when our lives feel like they are constantly on fire. As a result, we spend more time surviving than thriving. This is, after all, normal behavior when in crisis.
We lack an imagination of relentless possibility—a hopeful and better tomorrow that promotes resilience for everyone, everywhere.
Relief and rehabilitation from catastrophe, danger, and oppression are necessary for an individual’s survival and fulfilling their purpose in life. Caring for our families, working a meaningful job, creating art, belonging to a friend group, or supporting our communities are the ever-important, human-building tasks we joyfully take on when at peace with others, ourselves, and creation. The responsibility of free and liberal societies is to establish and uphold fundamental human rights and holistic outcomes that promote the sustainability of life for everyone, not just selective groups. Openness and equity are examples of the values needed for a more integrated and peaceful society that people can learn to develop.
Love—experienced, felt, acted upon, seen, and believed—is what binds humanity together.
To achieve this vision, we need a renewed imagination that breaks through our limited beliefs and anxieties. We need an imagination unbound by the ways of the past that transcends the power of possibility for tomorrow. We need an imagination that recognizes our greatest potential is limited only by our will. We need an imagination that insists faith—in ourselves, each other, and God—is what fulfills and inspires the promise of a shared future where everyone belongs.
Above all, we need an imagination shaped by love. What can sound like an abstract and unrealistic ideal in a world filled with hurt and hate is precisely why it remains the cure to our condition. Isolation, pain, and evil are sure to overtake us when love is undermined. Love—experienced, felt, acted upon, seen, and believed—is what binds humanity together.
Imagination and possibility are fully realized when love is celebrated and perfected in inclusive communities. Love is the defining force by which everyone is capable of receiving and harnessing for good. A hopeful tomorrow inspired by a movement of renewed imagination and love awaits a longing world.
